Editorial Policy
Varsity Draft is an independent publication covering youth volleyball, soccer, and football for parents of young athletes. This policy describes the standards that govern our guides, equipment reviews, training recommendations, and safety information.
Independence
Our coverage is editorially independent. Editorial decisions are made on the merits — what is accurate, important, and useful to parents — and are not determined by advertisers, equipment manufacturers, partners, or any commercial relationship. When we review a product, recommend a training program, or cover a recruiting service, that coverage is not for sale.
Sourcing and verification
We build our guidance from primary sources wherever possible — peer-reviewed research, governing-body documentation (NCAA, NFHS, USA Football, U.S. Soccer), certified coaching expertise, sports medicine research, and on-the-record statements from qualified professionals. We:
- cite and link to the sources we draw on, so parents can check our work;
- distinguish what is established evidence from what is emerging research, expert opinion, or common coaching practice;
- quantify claims where the data supports it, and avoid overstating certainty; and
- seek input from certified athletic trainers and sports medicine professionals where safety is concerned.
Safety-first standards
Youth sports safety is a core responsibility of our editorial mission. We follow concussion-protocol guidance from the CDC's HEADS UP program and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Equipment reviews prioritize safety certifications (NOCSAE, ASTM) alongside performance and value. We do not recommend products or practices that conflict with established safety guidelines, and we flag when the evidence on a safety topic is evolving or contested.
Accuracy and corrections
We work to get things right the first time, and we fix mistakes promptly and transparently when we do not. If you believe we have published an error — especially one that could affect a young athlete's safety or a family's recruiting decisions — please tell us immediately. See our Corrections Policy for how we review and resolve them.
Analysis and opinion
Some pieces include analysis or informed judgment about what a development means for youth sports families. Where we offer a view, we ground it in the evidence and make the reasoning clear, so parents can weigh it for themselves. Our coverage is general information and commentary, not professional medical, legal, or financial advice.
Commercial relationships
Varsity Draft may earn revenue through advertising, sponsorships, or affiliate relationships. These are kept separate from editorial judgment, and they do not buy favorable coverage or influence our equipment rankings, training recommendations, or recruiting advice. Sponsored content is always clearly labeled.
Equipment guides and recommendations
Our equipment guides and rankings are built against stated criteria — safety certifications, fit, durability, performance, and value for the target age group. They are honest about trade-offs and are reviewed and refreshed to keep pricing, features, and recommendations current. We aim to help parents choose well for their young athletes, not to push any single brand or product.
Feedback
We welcome questions, tips, and challenges to our reporting — especially from coaches, athletic trainers, and fellow sports parents. Email editor@varsitydraft.com.
